Movies and 2D graphics perform better at lower color depths when using Power Macintosh computers with earlier ATI graphics chipsets.

Rage at Being Left Behind - lowendmac.com
"Outrageous.
That's the only word I can think of to describe Apple's decision to leave millions of Mac owners with substandard graphics performance in OS X. Millions."

Snopes.com - Urban Legends

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Computers (Google PhoneBook)
Claim: Entering a phone number into the Google search engine can produce a home address and a map with directions to that address.

Status: True.
If your number appears in the mapping database, an icon resembling a telephone will appear to left of the entry on the results page.

so I tried it using the number for Nelson City Hall, and although I did not see a phone icon, when I clicked the Maps button above the search box a map appeared. then I tried the MakTekPro number in the Google search box, and when those results came up I again clicked Maps...yup, it works

Upgrade an iMac

Macworld: Upgrade an iMac
By Jennifer Berger, Christopher Breen and Jason Cox

You may have been an early adopter, the first in your sewing circle to own a tray-loading Bondi blue iMac or fruit-flavored wonder--or perhaps you held off until the arrival of the slot-loading fruit flavors or earth-toned ruby and sage models. But your computer now seems a little rickety. Your applications are begging for more RAM, and your hard drive is just about full to the brim.

But buying a new machine isn't your only option. An iMac may look hermetically sealed--and its insides truly are harder to access than a Power Mac's--but with some time, some patience, and a reasonable amount of money, you can turn your iMac into a more capable computer.

Wanted Dead or Alive: older Macintosh computers

update Oct. 2017: I am retiring and no longer accepting anything except the FlavorMacs as shown in the picture.

Give me your poor downtrodden forgotten lonely dusty iMacs. It's time they came out of your Kootenay closet or attic. I will salvage the usable parts, erase the hard drives and recycle the remainder in a responsible manner if they are dead and maybe offer a wee bounty if alive but just taking up space. You can also post an ad here if you are selling a vintage Apple computer though market is very limited in our area. Several older systems have been donated to families without the resources to buy computers, or have been stuck on dial-up for years, and lately to some displaced tenets of the Kerr fire. An older and slower Mac can still work quite well for younger kids before they find they need faster machines for YouTube.

If you are in the Trail/Castlegar/Slocan/Nelson/Kaslo and now Grand Forks area and you have an Apple or Macintosh computer, hardware, accessories or software that you no longer want and would prefer to recycle or find a new home for, then email d@ve or phone (1)250.354.4633 to inquire about drop-off in Nelson or possible pick-up if needed.

August 2011 update: Apple - Recycling Program

Slashdot | R.I.P. Original iMac: 1998-2003
"CNET News.com reports that, after five years, Apple has stopped selling the gumdrop-shaped iMac to the general public."
"And try telling people that Apple doesn't sell computers by the flavor anymore. :-)"
"Personally I prefer bland, opaque designs. Bright colors can make one feel cheerful and happy, which is so annoying. I would much rather be reminded of the non-descript conformity we all strive for."
"I especially liked the manuals... the shortest manuals ever, something like 20 words right?"
"Still, it will be hard to make a fishtank out of the flat-panel iMACs..."
"See what happens when you try to sell a computer with only one mouse button!"

Apple Macintosh Computer Repair Manuals and Resources
An informational resource for technicians who want to repair computers, specifically about Apple Macintosh computers and other Apple products.

apple-history.com :: iMac (Early 2001)
Announced in February 2001, this revision of the iMac finally brought FireWire to Apple's entire product line, in addition to a dramatic change in the iMac "colors". Apple chose to get rid of Sage and Ruby in favor of "Blue Dalmatian" and "Flower Power", two new patterns that were molded into the case using a technique which took Apple 18 months to perfect.
